The Straw Build

KTA delivered the structural advice and drawings for this sustainable two-storey extension to a traditional Georgian masonry farmhouse. Collaborating closely with Claire Lutzow Architect from concept to construction, we provided crucial input on foundations, roof framing, and connections to the existing structure.

Together with Claire and the timber panel supplier, we designed and constructed the extension’s walls using prefabricated timber panels with straw infill, ensuring optimal vertical support and insulation. The final touch included sweet chestnut cladding, an oxidised copper roof, and a lime render interior.

Utilizing EcoCocon Straw Panels in the walls, this innovative system combines the timelessness of straw and wood with modern engineering. Its flexibility makes it perfect for high-load applications and multi-level construction, even in earthquake-prone areas, all while offering excellent fire resistance and requiring minimal energy for production.
